NORMAN — It sounds like OU wide receiver Keontez Lewis avoided serious injury during his scary collision with a brick wall on Oct. 4.
Lewis was stretchered off the field during the Sooners' game against Kent State and taken off-site for testing. There is currently no known timetable for his potential return to the field.
“Thank goodness, right?” Arbuckle said Tuesday. “That was a scary situation for everyone in that stadium, and it made my heart stop for a little bit. Just because of how much I enjoy being around Keontez, how much I love Keontez and the type of kid that he is, and thinking about everything that he has in his personal life, too.
“That was a really scary situation, and so it was great to see him walk into the building the next day, he had a smile on his face. He has to do the proper protocol with training staff and everything, but Keontez Lewis, what a great kid. Thank goodness that he's all right. Whenever he's ready to play, he'll be ready to play, but I don't know when that is.”
Venables said Tuesday there are plans to add padding to Owen Field following Lewis' play.
“They're putting up some padding,” Venables said. “I don't know exactly when or how much and all of that, but I think they're going to put some padding around that brick area where it's more vulnerable.”
