It’s an old saying, but it still works. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It would have never caught fire if it weren’t true. If you still have doubts about the accuracy of that statement, proving it is relatively easy. All you have to do is check out the NFL and its defending Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Yes, we know… We know… They hate being called that, but honoring that request doesn’t change the facts, nor does it alter how people, the media, or other owners and coaches view them.
They get every team’s best shot on game days. Other franchises raid them for talent and coaches. We’ve even seen Howie Roseman understudies leave to be hired as executives elsewhere.
The Shane Steichen era seems to be catching fire in Indianapolis.
They frustrate us sometimes. They’ve broken our hearts (and their own) more times than we care to remember, but as a sports fan, you can do a whole heck of a lot worse than cheering for the Birds.
They have made three Super Bowl appearances in eight seasons. Two of those appearances have resulted in wins. In February of 2018 and 2023, the Indianapolis Colts made the same decision after watching Philadelphia play in football’s biggest game. They hired the Eagles‘ offensive coordinator and made him their head coach.
Things didn’t work out for Frank Reich, but current Eagles HC Nick Sirianni came from his coaching tree. Things started slowly for Shane Steichen. He teetered at .500 with a 17-17 record.
Steichen seems to have found his footing. He’s 3-0 in 2025, and he has beaten his first three opponents by a combined 103-56 final score. Oh, and by the way, did anyone see who his starting quarterback is?
Shane Steichen has embarrassed Brian Daboll by barely lifting a finger.
It’s year three of Shane Steichen’s coaching era in Indianapolis. This is year four for Brian Daboll as head coach of the New York Giants. Unlike Steichen, he has not had a positive impact in the Big Apple.
Things started well. He earned a postseason berth in year one. Somehow, he stole the NFL’s Coach of the Year Trophy from Nick Sirianni after the 2022 regular season. Daboll and Giants GM Joe Schoen have authored one blunder after another.
Their most recent mishandling appears to be of Daniel Jones, who is an early candidate for a Pro Bowl mention. Oh, come on! So, you’re telling us that no one wants to talk about how the Giants gave up on Jones, and he is now looking the part of a former top-ten selection?
Stop us if this sounds familiar. The Giants give up on a player, believing he has minimal left, and that player moves on to become a better player elsewhere.
In 2022, Philadelphia signed James Bradberry after Big Blue allowed him to walk. He earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in his first Eagles season. We realize that some will ask for more evidence, given that Bradberry stalled after that first run with the Birds. Well, how about Saquon Barkley? The Giants let him walk, too. How did that turn out?
Daboll, once viewed as a quarterback whisperer, couldn’t get sustained results out of Jones. They benched him in favor of Tommy DeVito in November 2024. Jones asked out. Giants owner granted his request. He landed in Minneapolis and played for the Minnesota Vikings for a spell.
On March 13, Jones signed a one-year deal with the Colts. Steichen learned he liked Jones better than Anthony Richardson, the 2023 first-round selection. Jones was named the starter, and in his first three starts, he has completed a career-high 71.6% of his pass attempts.
He has thrown for three TDs vs. zero interceptions. He has run for 55 yards and three TDs on 17 attempts. Most importantly, he has helped lead the Colts to a perfect 3-0 start.
Come on. You have to admit that this is hilarious. We have all grown accustomed to seeing the Eagles make fools out of the Giants organization, but now, it appears former Eagles assistants are doing the same thing.
Brian Daboll appears to be walking the plank in New York. He has sped up his clock and warmed his own hot seat. Giants fans are watching Jones become the quarterback he could never become in their city.
Russell Wilson failed. Can you imagine the ire that Daboll will draw if Jaxson Dart struggles? We hate to kick a man while he is down, but his failure seems like a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’.
