The Edmonton Oilers have been busy of late with the recent extension of Vasily Podkolzin agreed upon today. And it sounds like more moves may be in play soon.
Via insider Frank Seravalli, the Oilers are also working on reaching an extension with defenseman Jake Walman. The 29 year old was recently acquired by the team during the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
Unfortunately for Oilers fans, it is not the big one they have been waiting patiently for. But it is a positive development, nonetheless, as the defender asserted himself as a valuable contributor for the squad.
What does this mean for Edmonton?
This move when completed will help solidify an improved backend in Edmonton. Defense has always been a topic of concern in Alberta throughout McDavid's tenure with the team. Walman helps add needed depth to the Oilers blueline.
The 29 year old fit in nicely with the Oilers during his brief stint with the organization last season. Last year in 65 games split between the San Jose Sharks and Oilers, Walman amassed 7 goals and 33 assists for 40 points in the regular season.
It was the playoffs where Walman's worth for the Oilers became most evident, however. In 22 postseason games Walman tallied 2 goals and 8 assists, establishing himself as a core defenseman the Oilers can count on.
We'll see what the Walman contract looks like as the Oilers close in on a deal. While that occurs, Oilers nation will keep an eye on ongoing negotiations with McDavid.
