Golfers are now into the postseason, while girls tennis is in its final week of the regular season.
Soccer and volleyball teams are now into the second half of their seasons, while cross country is just a few weeks away from its league meets.
So, it’s getting deeper into the fall high school sports seasons for Marion-area athletes.
To recognize the best performances of last week, the Marion Star is offering polls for its top boys and girls athletes. Fans may vote for their favorite nominees below and as often as allowed. The polls will be open through early Sunday, Sept. 28, at MarionStar.com and its app.
Marion Star Girls Athlete of the Week Poll for Sept. 22
North Union volleyball’s Kennedy Harrah produced 51 assists and 20 digs during a 3-2 win over Northwestern.
Pleasant volleyball’s Kamryn Cocherl put down 27 kills with 24 serve receptions in a win over River Valley.
River Valley volleyball’s Hayley Wickersham picked up 25 assists, three aces and 11 digs in a win over Marion Harding.
Ridgedale volleyball’s Richelle Gleespen recorded 14 kills, 12 points, 32 digs and 13 serve receptions in a win over Upper Scioto Valley.
Pleasant golfer Emery Gorenflo shot an 88 at the fourth Mid Ohio Atheltic Conference Tournament at Little Apple.
Marion Harding tennis player Abigail Hanke scored a crucial 6-4, 6-0 win over Ontario in second singles to help the Presidents to a lone spot in first place of the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference standings.
Marion Star Boys Athlete of the Week Poll for Sept. 22
River Valley golfer Ashler Gates fired a 79 to win the fourth tournament of the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference at Deer Ridge.
North Union golfer Jenson Stover shot a 38 at Lakeland in a win over Graham.
Pleasant cross country’s Joey Dietsch ran seventh in 17:17 at Ontario’s Bill Brown Invitational.
Mount Gilead cross country’s Owen Hershner was 10th in 16:12 against Division I runners at the Strongsville Invitational.
Highland cross country’s Caleb Burton took fifth in 16 minutes at the Ohio Caverns Invitational.
Last week’s winners
There were 1,122 votes cast in the girls poll last week with Elgin volleyball’s Kadence Gear getting 404 votes for 36 percent to win it. Gear had 13 kills, three aces, 15 digs and 17 assists in a win over Ridgemont. Other nominees were Pleasant volleyball’s Faith McCants,. Cardington volleyball’s Alexis Longsdorf, North Union golfer Gabby Lindsey, River Valley volleyball’s Myla Kenney, Marion Harding cross country runner Lydia Price, Cardington cross country runner MicKenzie White, Ridgedale volleyball’s Hadessah Mills and Northmor cross country runner Kate Lehman.
In last week’s boys poll, there were 356 votes cast with North Union cross country runner Ben Bonnell earning 153 votes for 43 percent to win it. Bonnell was fifth in 17:24 in the Green Division of the Dublin Jerome Celtic Clash. Other nominees were River Valley golfer Chase Smith, Pleasant soccer’s Rodric Gomez, Ridgedale cross country runner Elliot Weston, Highland cross country runner Matthew Miller and Mount Gilead cross country runner Rowan Shaw.
