Rams PFF grades: Best and worst performers vs. Texans in Week 1

It wasn’t pretty or high-scoring, but the Los Angeles Rams left Week 1 with a win over the Houston Texans. They opened the year with a 14-9 victory at home against a quality opponent, starting off the season by showing toughness and versatility on both sides of the ball.

Pro Football Focus released grades for every player in the game and there were a handful of notable standouts. Matthew Stafford shined in his season debut after missing camp with a back injury, and Puka Nacua picked up right where he left off as a superstar receiver.

Defensively, Nate Landman and Jared Verse led the way, with Cobie Durant earning a really strong grade from PFF, too. Here’s a look at the best and worst performers from Week 1.

Top 5 offense

  • QB Matthew Stafford: 92.9
  • WR Puka Nacua: 91.6
  • RG Kevin Dotson: 75.4
  • OL Beaux Limmer: 70.7
  • LG Steve Avila: 69.7

Stafford was outstanding in this one, silencing any concerns about his bad back. He made five big-time throws and didn’t have a single turnover-worthy play, putting together a clean performance from start to finish.

Nacua caught 10 of his 11 passes and forced three missed tackles, picking up seven first downs in the game.

Dotson, Limmer and Avila all stood out on the interior, mostly for their run blocking. Limmer’s 89.9 run-blocking grade was the only Rams player with a grade higher than 72 in that department. Limmer and Dotson each allowed two pressures, and Avila gave up none.

Top 5 defense

  • LB Nate Landman: 90.7
  • OLB Jared Verse: 90.6
  • CB Cobie Durant: 87.7
  • OLB Byron Young: 78.5
  • S Kamren Kinchens: 66.4

Landman’s Rams debut couldn’t have gone any better than it did. He made 10 tackles, six stops, had zero missed tackles and forced a fumble in the fourth quarter that saved the game.

Verse didn’t have a sack but he led the team with four pressures and also drew a holding penalty on the Texans’ first offensive snap.

Durant allowed three catches on four targets for 33 yards but also had a terrific interception.

Young was a real star of this game, making nine tackles with three pressures and a sack.

Kinchens nearly had an interception on a play where Kobie Turner was called for roughing the passer, breaking up one pass in the win.

Bottom 5 offense

  • LT Alaric Jackson: 54.3
  • WR Tutu Atwell: 51.8
  • TE Tyler Higbee: 46.3
  • TE Colby Parkinson: 43.9
  • TE Davis Allen: 42.7

Jackson allowed two pressures and was just OK as a run blocker, but he had limited practice time due to his blood clots so he’s still getting comfortable.

Atwell was targeted just a single time, catching it for a gain of 4 yards.

The three tight ends that played were all among the Rams’ lowest-graded players. Higbee didn’t see a single pass come his way, Parkinson fumbled in the fourth quarter and Allen’s lone catch was a 13-yard touchdown; he had a 46.9 run-blocking grade.

Bottom 5 defense

  • S Kamren Curl: 58.7
  • DL Tyler Davis: 58.1
  • CB Emmanuel Forbes: 53.8
  • OLB Josaiah Stewart: 53.3
  • DB Quentin Lake: 39.3

Curl struggled a little bit in coverage, allowing five receptions on five targets for 47 yards.

Davis had a sack, which was his only pressure of the game, but he also made two stops.

Forbes’ lower grade was largely due to his poor tackling, missing two attempts in the win. He was great in coverage, though, giving up just one catch for 1 yard on a single target.

Stewart batted one pass but didn’t have any pressures in the 15 snaps he played, though only six were as a pass rusher.

Lake had by far the lowest grade on the team, finishing with as many missed tackles (2) as he had tackles recorded (2). He was also called for defensive holding twice.

Other notables

  • WR Davante Adams: 66.3
  • CB Ahkello Witherspoon: 65.0
  • DT Kobie Turner: 64.3
  • RB Kyren Williams: 56.9

In Adams’ debut, he caught four passes for 51 yards, the best of which was a back-shoulder catch along the left sideline.

Witherspoon shut down every receiver that lined up across from him, including Nico Collins, allowing just two catches (three targets) for 5 yards in the game.

Turner had two pressures and three tackles but was called for roughing the passer in the fourth quarter; it was a questionable call, however.

Williams finished with 67 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown, a somewhat disappointing average of just 3.7 yards.
