The 20-year-old Borden, Sask., native set Canadian records in two opportunities at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. On Thursday, Sutherland posted a time of 54.04 seconds in the preliminary round before besting the mark on Saturday’s final, when she stopped the clock at 53.26.
American Jasmine Jones finished first with a time of 53.15, setting a meet record. Rachel Glenn, also from the U.S. came third.
Barring illness or injury, Sutherland, an University of Michigan athlete, will arrive at the Canadian Olympic trials later this month in Montreal having qualified for the Paris Olympics.
