Those hoping to see Terrance Ferguson catch his first NFL pass will have to wait a little bit longer. For the second week in a row, the Los Angeles Rams have made their top rookie a healthy scratch. He didn’t play any offensive snaps in Week 1 and played just four in Week 2 but was inactive last week against the Philadelphia Eagles and will be again today against the Indianapolis Colts.
Ferguson was the 46th overall pick in the draft this year, a player they considered selecting with the 26th pick before trading down 20 spots with the Atlanta Falcons. He’s a talented tight end with a high ceiling, but he’s not yet ready to contribute on offense or special teams, it appears.
Sean McVay gave a little bit of an explanation last week for why Ferguson was inactive, noting that the rookie missed time in training camp with an injury, which set him back.
“I think we’ve got tremendous depth at the tight end position,” he said. “Got a guy in Tyler Higbee who’s been doing it at a high clip for a long time. Colby Parkinson, I think, has taken tremendous steps, as has Davis Allen. And you really look at it, (he) did miss some critical time throughout training camp with the groin injury.”
McVay said he has no doubt Ferguson will be a “big-time player” for the Rams at some point but with Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen all healthy, Ferguson has to wait his turn.
