With President Trump on the way, Ryder Cup steps up security

President Donald Trump is planning to attend the opening matches of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island, heightening both the national stakes and the security challenges of the event.

Ryder Cup organizers on Wednesday released an updated list of security restrictions and prohibitions for Friday’s opening matches. Items now banned include:

  • Portable folding chairs

  • Large vaping devices

  • Torch-style lighters

  • Metal/hard plastic insulated beverage containers

  • Large umbrellas

  • Range finders

  • Laptops and tablets

Throughout his two terms, Trump has maintained a close connection to the golf world. Most recently, he has endorsed Keegan Bradley’s captaincy. Scottie Scheffler revealed earlier this week that Trump regularly reaches out to him after Scheffler’s victories.

“I'm deeply honored that the President of the United States is going to come support our team at the Ryder Cup,” Bradley said earlier this week. “I think anytime you can be around a current president is a pretty phenomenal thing, but when you're representing your country at a place like Bethpage Black in New York, having the president there to support you is something that is just absolutely incredible. I'm really grateful to him for doing that for us.”

Trump has been a regular presence at sporting events throughout his presidencies, most recently at the US Open tennis tournament, also in New York. Trump’s appearance at the men’s final caused significant delays; he will be appearing at the Ryder Cup later in the day in an attempt to alleviate some similar potential problems.
