A new Netflix documentary might be required to chronicle the looming and can't-miss showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Sept. 28.
Exactly one month before the Packers go to Dallas to play the Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 4, the two teams completed one of the biggest trades in NFL history — the Packers acquiring All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons in exchange for two first-round picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Packers-Cowboys is always a big hit regardless of circumstance. It's two iconic franchises with rich history and plenty of Super Bowl titles. Playing on Sunday night means they'll be battling under the bright lights of AT&T Stadium in primetime. Millions and millions were going to be watching whether Parsons was in Dallas or elsewhere. But adding the Parsons trade to the mix will make Packers-Cowboys the most highly anticipated game of the 2025 regular season in the NFL.
Keep in mind, the Cowboys are a week away from opening their own regular season against the rival Philadelphia Eagles. Instead of feeling the excitement and anticipation of a new year, the Cowboys will enter 2025 without their best player and little chance of being a Super Bowl contender. And Jerry Jones and the Cowboys just supercharged a conference rival who has consistently gone into Dallas and scored monumental wins.
It will be interesting to see how fans in Dallas treat Parsons upon his return. What seems clear is Parsons wanted to be in Dallas. The situation between player and team became untenable when the two sides couldn't find a half-way point monetarily. Now, Parsons is going to Green Bay and will become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Quite the dichotomy: the highest valued NFL franchise wasn't willing to pay a future Hall of Fame caliber player, but the smallest market in pro sports was.
Come Sept. 28, all the pressure will be on be on Parsons and the Packers. While Dallas begins a rebuild, Green Bay is now squarely positioned as one of the top Super Bowl contenders. Matt LaFleur's team will face a difficult opening stretch that includes home games against the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders over the span of five days and then the trip to Dallas in Week 4 before an early bye week, so the pressure is on to perform in September. It's officially a Super Bowl or bust season in Titletown and every game matters.
There are many big winners of the Parsons-to-Packers trade, but the biggest winner might be NBC. Parsons and the Packers coming to Dallas in Week 4 is going to be must-see TV.
