Bucs secondary remains a question that needs answering before 2025 season

In 2024, the Bucs' secondary was a major liability last year with their pass defense. Jason Licht knew that when he went out and strengthened the pass rush, as well as adding to their cornerback room.

Through two preseason games, it has had some brilliant moments, especially in the turnover department. However, they do have some blown coverages that can be concerning. As ESPN's Jenna Laine points out, last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the secondary had some significant letdowns.

“While cornerback Zyon McCollum notched an interception (so did Kindle Vildor, along with a deep ball pass breakup), Jamel Dean surrendered a 42-yard reception to Roman Wilson, a 2-yard touchdown to Brandon Johnson and a pass interference call on a single drive.”

The turnovers are a major upside. Todd Bowles talked about wanting more turnovers to give the Bucs' high-powered offense more chances, and so far they have done just that. If that can roll into the regular season, it will go a long way to helping this defense, but they need to be able to make stops during drives and avoid the chunk plays.

So far, they have proven they cannot do that just yet.
